PRESS RELEASE

Jazz-à-Vienne Sydney - “MUSIC TO YOUR EARS”

Featuring leading jazz artists from Sydney, Paris and Tokyo, the 5th Annual Jazz-à-Vienne Sydney festival (October 1st – 9th) is proud to present a series of special musical evenings across Sydney - from Katoomba to Palm Beach.

The featured musicians include: Dan Barnett - a musician, vocalist, composer and band leader who is often described as a “rare talent” on the Australian and International Jazz circuits - from Manly to Montreux to Rio. Dan’s recently released fifth album, Somewhere, Someplace, Sometime (June 2011) is a genuine treat for the ears.

Charito is an internationally renowned vocalist from Tokyo, who in recent years has released albums in collaboration with the legendary Michel Legrand (Academy Award and Grammy winner) and with Harvey Mason (multiple-Grammy nominee). Her highly personal and expressive vocal style incorporates the breadth of her musical interests, from straight-ahead soulful ballads to hard-swinging grooves and improvisational adventures.

Tricia Evy, is an acclaimed singer from Paris. She will be accompanied by Sydney musicans Jake Barden, Steve Barry & Brendan Clark.  Their repertoire includes the music of Billie Holliday and Ella Fitzgerald interlaced with original compositions. Tricia has performed at the famous Olympia in Paris.

Emma Hamilton, who comes from a musical family in Sydney, is an exciting newcomer to the jazz scene. In early 2011, her La Musique album was launched on the ABC Jazz label to excellent reviews. In what has been a busy year, Emma supported the legendary Grace Knight and performed at La Cave Du 38' Riv in Paris - just two of the many highlights for this talented performer in 2011.

John Morrison has delighted audiences for more than 25 years with his humor and dedication to sounds that swing. Equally at home in a small group or big band setting, his musical facility runs the entire spectrum from traditional jazz, swing, Bebop, R&B, Soul and commercial jazz rock. John, who was voted Australia's best big band drummer, has been the driving force behind Swing City.

Suzanna Wellink is a 22-year-old vocalist who since 2006 has performed a number of times to great acclaim at Montreux, Vienne, Paris, Buis-les-Baronnies and Berlin. She performs with Zooo Superbande, Rory Thomas’ ATOM Quintet and The Pilomotor Reflex.

Zooo Superbande is an outstanding big bandcomprising of students from the Rory Thomas Music Life School of Performing Arts in Sydney’s west. The band has toured Europe many times and won the Most Outstanding Performance Award at the Montreux Jazz Festival on a number of occasions. They have worked with Randy Brecker, John Morrison, Dan Barnett, Mark Murphy, Don Burrows, Galapagos Duck, The Idea of North, Emma Pask and Alain Brunet.

The exclusive naming rights for “Jazz-à-Vienne Sydney” was granted by the city of Vienne, France which hosts one of largest annual jazz festivals in Europe. Jazz-à-Vienne Sydney 2011 will be dedicated to the memory of the late Rory J Thomas OAM. Professor Thomas, who was a prominent educator and musician from western Sydney, founded the festival through his strong links with the city of Vienne where for many years he was Professor of Jazz Studies at the Acadèmie Ponsard and close friend of and collaborator with the Jazz-à-Vienne, France festival. In April 2010, Professor Thomas received one of France’s highest honours - the Chevalier de L’ordre des Arts et des Lettres - for his contribution to the advancement of French / Australian relationships through jazz music.
